Encyclopaedia Britannica launches documentary site

238 years after publishing the first edition of its internationally known encyclopedia, Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc. has launched an e-commerce site dedicated to DVDs from the company’s library of documentaries on subjects in history, biography, science, the humanities and more. DVDs are offered in English and Spanish.

While serving the general public, the company’s Britannica Video Store specially targets home-schoolers and educators. Current titles include biographies of Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln; programs on Chaucer and Shakespeare; surveys of Africa, Europe and South America; science studies on matter and atomic-molecular theory; and others.

Each title a customer purchases is loaded onto a DVD; multiple videos may be burned on a single disc until it’s full. The first video on a DVD costs $49.95; additional videos cost $29.95.

The e-commerce site is hosted by Allied Vaughn, a media manufacturing and distribution company.
