Barnes & Noble turns to the web for procuring store supplies

Barnes & Noble Inc. has completed installation of a web-based supplies ordering system in nearly 1,000 Barnes & Noble and B. Dalton stores.

Using a Bedford, MA-based SupplyWorks Inc. system on Barnes & Noble’s intranet with an Oracle-based financial system, Barnes & Noble has automated the ordering and tracking of supplies for store management. The system moves the ordering of routine operational supplies from the phone or fax to the web. It generates automatic reports for management at the stores and at headquarters. The system allows routine restocking of common items with templates across multiple vendors.

Barnes & Noble piloted the system at 45 stores in August, then rolled it out to 900 additional stores in September.

"It was imperative that we develop and implement a streamlined online supply ordering solution quickly and efficiently," said Jack Kelleher, vice president of operations for New York City-based Barnes & Noble. "SupplyWorks impressed us with their ability to meet our aggressive implementation goals. And the smooth transition from our manual procedures to the SupplyWorks supplier relationship management solution allowed us to complete the project on time for the fall selling season."
