For pet owners’ online listening pleasure, toys make noise

MP3s are not just for listening to music. Online pet supply retailer Drs. Foster & Smith has launched a section of its web site featuring the sounds pet toys make. Clicking on the These Toys Talk or Click to Listen link launches a Windows media player on the user’s computer, which reproduces the sound.

The listening feature is an outgrowth of customer demand to know what sounds a toy makes. In fact, Drs. Foster & Smith, No. 83 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites, reports that phone sales reps keep a supply of toys on hand to squeeze over the phone for customers who want to know what the toy sounds like.

Brent Goodman, Internet supervisor, recorded all the sounds using studio-quality, portable digital mixing equipment and software. He then optimized each sound file for the best quality at the fastest download speed in MP3 format. "I’ve been involved in audio production for over 10 years, so I jumped at the chance to bring this fun new content to our customers," he tells InternetRetailer.com.
