VeriFone sparks Internet POS terminal with wireless options

To meet growing interest among retailers in using a wireless POS terminal capable of processing credit card transactions over the Internet, VeriFone has upgraded its Omni 3750 terminal to accommodate wireless options for web connectivity, VeriFone says.

“VeriFone is now capable of providing any type of IP connectivity a merchant would want,” a spokesman says. In addition to traditional dial-up and an ethernet connection for DSL or cable modems, the Omni now supports wi-fi, CDMA and GPRS connectivity, options seeing growing interest among merchants in shopping malls, he adds.

The Omni terminal is a modular device that can be easily modified for different web connectivity as well as for multiple applications, the spokesman says. VeriFone now also offers the VeriFone Comm Server, which makes it possible for software application developers to provide different forms of web connectivity on Omni terminals. In addition to credit card transactions, web-connected applications that can run on the terminal include labor scheduling and employment verification systems, the spokesman says.
