Dallas, Oct. 7, 2003 - EXE Technologies® Inc. (Nasdaq: EXEE), a global leader in supply chain business solutions, today announced it will soon begin shipping customer applications that deploy IBM (NYSE: IBM) WebSphere® Portal Version 5.0 as the content aggregation platform for the company`s EXceedTM family of supply chain execution implementations over the Internet and corporate intranets.
"IBM`s latest enhancements to its WebSphere Portal platform make it an ideal foundation on which to build our real-time, end-to-end solutions to link the supply chain from the product manufacturer to the distributor and all the way to the retailer," said Joe Cowan, EXE president and chief executive officer. "A critical element in supply chain execution is the ability for corporate users to view all critical data needed to do their jobs. IBM`s portal technology provides a `dashboard` for our customers to view all of their EXceed supply chain applications on a single screen - including real-time manufacturing data, graphics, instrumentation, event notification, personal information management, alerts, KPIs and other data.
"In addition, this portal capability allows us to expand our connectivity to other enterprise applications because it ensures interoperability among heterogeneous software applications and incorporates support for web-based services," Cowan added. "Users at multiple levels in the chain now can collaborate among disparate business processes and applications, including e-mail and collaboration suites, without having to customize any software connections between applications."
One of the important benefits of the WebSphere Portal technology is its Portal Server, which functions as an application server to provide a single workspace for multi-application interaction. It operates in the space between database servers and presentation applications, running the business application logic, managing the storage of data in the database layer and provision of data to the presentation layer. The server facilitates the sharing of application capabilities in an organized and efficient way, making it easier to write, manage and maintain the applications that people use throughout a company.
"No industry standard has yet been specified for portal servers but the WebSphere Portal adheres to the standard submission (JSR 168) currently under review and we feel it will ultimately be the platform of choice for applications such as ours," Cowan said. "We`ve been a high level IBM alliance associate for several years and we appreciate their level of commitment to us as well as the quality of their integrated WebSphere product suite. It`s a real benefit in the deployment of real-time supply chain execution systems for our customers."
"IBM is pleased to work with companies like EXE Technologies to provide complementary solutions for our WebSphere software," said Larry Bowden, Vice President of Portal and Lotus Products for IBM. "This announcement immediately enables the hundreds of WebSphere Portal partners with pre-integrated portlets to work seamlessly with EXE Technologies’ solutions, both reducing customer response time to changing needs and expanding the value of their end-to-end supply chain solutions - all the way from manufacturing to distribution to retail stores."
