Post Office, Donnelley unveil new package tracking system
Online buyers have consistently shown that they like the ability to track the progress of their order from the time they place it until they receive it. But until now, they were unable to do so if the retailer shipper via the U.S. Postal Service.
Working with the Post Office, Willowbrook, IL-based R.R. Donnelley Logistics has developed a program that allows consumers to track their orders as they move through a Donnelley shipping facility and then through the Post Office system. While Donnelley is the only logistics company offering the tracking ability now, the system was developed in such a way that other companies can take advantage of it as well, Donnelley says.
Providing the service to consumers costs a retailer 15 cents a package, Linda Carlisle, director of brand development for Donnelley Logistics, tells InternetRetailer.com.
To use the system, a consumer first must receive order confirmation from a retailer with a tracking number. The consumer can click on the i.d. number and go to the USPS site. Retailers can also use Donnelley to provide the service, in which case the consumer goes to the retailer’s web site to track the package.
Retailers who wish to use the service must sign up for the USPS’s new delivery confirmation service. As of next year, that service will be built into the Postal Service’s parcel rates.
R.R. Donnelley Logistics is the largest commercial mailer, processing more than 19 billion print and mail pieces and 130 million parcels annually.
