FreshDirect hooks ‘Certified Sustainable’ distinction for seafood
FreshDirect says it is the first U.S. online retailer to offer certified sustainable seafood. The online grocer has been recognized by the Marine Stewardship Council as supplying sustainable Alaska Salmon, Pacific Halibut and other seafood.
Using the Marine Stewardship Council’s criteria, third-party auditors verified that FreshDirect is a part of the council’s certified “Chain of Custody,” which indicates FreshDirect’s business practices guarantee sustainable seafood authenticity. From certified sustainable fisheries to specially designated boats, vendors and a processing room, nothing interrupts the high level of responsibility expected for seafood that carries the council’s certified eco-label, the company says.
“Seafood lovers and industry leaders are increasingly aware of how important sustainable fishing practices are to ensuring the future of ocean ecosystems,” says Steve Michaelson, president of FreshDirect, No. 68 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide. “Recognizing and supporting well-managed, responsible fisheries provides global benefits.”
Founded in 1997, the Marine Stewardship Council is an independent, international non-profit organization that worked for two years to develop its principles and criteria for sustainable fishing. The guidelines set environmental and production standards for sustainable, well managed fisheries.
FreshDirect’s certified sustainable fish includes Pacific Halibut, Alaskan Coho Salmon, Alaskan King Salmon, Alaskan Sockeye Salmon and Pacific Sablefish. In addition to those six categories, FreshDirect plans to add additional varieties to its sustainable lineup in the near future.
