RETURN PATH CLIENTS EXPERIENCE 16% IMPROVEMENT IN E-MAIL PERFORMANCE

New integrated service offering increases performance of e-mail programs by retaining customers and boosting deliverability

New York, NY, October 13, 2003 – Return Path, an e-mail performance management company, announced today that companies using its services have improved their permission-based e-mail program performance by an average of 16 percent – optimizing revenue potential and cost savings. Return Path, formerly focused on providing list-performance tools such as ECOA, expanded its services earlier this year to include strategic consulting and deliverability tools through the acquisitions of GasPedal Consulting and Assurance Systems. The aggregate effect of these services had been anticipated but can now be quantified.

Separately, the company announced that it recently completed a major upgrade of its core E-mail Change of Address (ECOA) system for consumers, adding e-mail forwarding and address book upload for its 14 million members – a move that is expected to drive viral consumer registrations and increase the value of this customer retention tool for its corporate clients.

Companies that focus on e-mail deliverability and customer retention witness a measurable difference in the efficacy of their e-mail communication programs. Overall, Return Path has increased client e-mail list and deliverability performance by 16 percent. Clients who have been using Assurance Services have raised their average deliverability rate 9 percent, while clients who have been using PureList Services (including ECOA and E-mail List Hygiene) have seen an average 7 percent annual correction of invalid e-mail addresses on their list. Consumer products, media, telecommunications, technology and associations saw the most improvement, based on higher rates of file degradation at the outset.

"Return Path strives to make e-mail perform at a higher level for both businesses and consumers," says Matt Blumberg, Return Path CEO. "Making sure opt-in e-mail is sent to the correct address and making sure it is actually delivered to the inbox are critical components of direct marketing that are routinely done in direct mail but are often overlooked when it comes to e-mail. Our services squarely answer the need to combat e-mail response slippage caused by spam and customer ambivalence – both things that everyone battles as they fight for relevance in the inbox."

"Marketers and publishers will see a huge impact to their bottom line if they go beyond the basics of e-mail," Blumberg says. "We are pleased to be able to quantify the impact our Assurance and PureList services have had for our clients – and these numbers don’t even include the impact of our GasPedal Consulting projects, where clients who have implemented our best practices program changes have reported significant gains in open rate and conversion."
