Q1 gross merchandise sales at eBay rise 18% to $12.5 billion


Gross merchandise volume at eBay rose 18% year over year in the first quarter ended March 31, to $12.5 billion from $10.6 billion in the year-ago period, the company reports. Gross merchandise volume represents the total value of all successfully closed listings on eBay’s trading platforms. Fixed price trading contributed about $4.3 billion or 34% of total gross merchandise volume in Q2.

The number of new listings of items for sale in Q2, 575.4 million, was 33% higher than the 431.8 million new listings in last year’s Q2. Registered users at the end of the quarter totaled 192.9 million, a 31% increase over the 147.1 million users reported a year ago. Active users, defined as the number of users on eBay’s platform who bid, bought, or listed an item within the previous 12 months, increased to a record 75.4 million in the quarter, up 25% from a year earlier.

Consolidated Q2 net revenue of $1.39 billion for the quarter represented a 35% year-over-year increase. U.S net revenue including Shopping.com rose 30% to $527.2 million, while international marketplace revenue rose 25% to $493 million. Net revenue from its PayPal payments business rose 47% to $335.1 million, excluding the impact of foreign currency translation.

Consolidated net income for the quarter was $248.3 million.
