VeriFone Delivers Wi-Fi Enabled Omni 3750 Terminals For Debit And Credit Transactions

The San Marino Mall In Ecuador Is World`s First to Take Advantage of the 802.11b Standard To Deliver Fast, Secure Transactions to Over 250 Merchants and Their Customers

SANTA CLARA, Calif., - October 20, 2003 VeriFone Inc., the worldwide leader in electronic payment solutions, today announced the first ever 802.11b, or `Wi-Fi`, based payment solution, installed in the Mall of San Marino in Guayaquil, Ecuador. VeriFone has partnered with leading data network equipment provider D- Link Latin America to build the environment which services over 250 retailers, and Ecuador-based Medianet for processing.

Wi-Fi-based payment solutions offer distinct advantages compared with other countertop POS installations. First, the relative ease of the install means systems are up and processing more quickly than standard implementations. Second, all dial-up traffic can be consolidated on a single line or high-speed link, delivering a tremendous cost savings by not requiring additional phone lines. Additionally, transaction speed is 350% faster, averaging around four seconds for a transaction.

"With this installation at The Mall of San Marino, VeriFone again proves its ability to embrace cutting edge technologies, and make them relevant to local merchants, retailers and processors," stated Bill Nichols, VeriFone regional market director, Latin America and Caribbean.

Nichols continued, "We expect wireless-enabled POS terminals to become more mainstream over the next several years, particularly when the solution is delivered with the right partners."

VeriFone is the only POS payment systems manufacturer offering an entire line of IP-enabled terminals from Ethernet to Wi-Fi to cellular data technology. Additionally, a unique design feature of the VeriFone Omni 3750 is its modular architecture of the terminal, which allows customers to `swap out` hardware options and software modules that cover the gamut of payment modalities.

The Mall of San Marino payment solution has been designed to accommodate mag-stripe debit and credit transactions, EMV smart card transactions and value-added applications, taking advantage of the speed provided by Wi-Fi networks. The value-added applications include loyalty, telco `top up` services and gift card.

Carlos Casassus, General Director D-Link Latin America, says, "Through this installation, D-Link is showing to the market that a worldwide wireless LAN leader is also focused on innovative solutions for the retail market. D-Link Latin America and VeriFone have shown how two leaders can work together offering the best service and solution to the emerging retail market in Latin America, making it simple, friendly and safe."

This solution incorporates D-Link access point DWL-900AP+ in access point and access client modalities, generating two levels of wireless cells to which the merchants will be connected. Wired equivalent privacy (WEP) encryption, the industry`s most secure, will be used in this installation.
