Outsourced fulfillment provider APL Direct Logistics is in talks with a merchant about shipping orders to consumers in boxes sealed with tamper-evident tape, President Frank DiMaria tells Internet Retailer. “You can’t open the box without creating a pattern that says ‘void,’” DiMaria says.

For starters, it makes most sense to use such tape to seal boxes that contain food or other consumables, DiMaria says. But with the disruptions in mail services these days, he says the tamper-evident tape can create a higher comfort level among consumers that their packages are safe to open. The cost per package is only pennies, he says.

DiMaria says he got the idea to seal packages using tamper-evident tape when he learned that home inspectors use it to seal off a house that has been inspected for radon. Inspectors use such tape on windows and doors to provide evidence if someone has been in the house after the inspection.
