Books-A-Million reports flat Q1 sales

Books-A-Million Inc. is reporting flat e-commerce sales for the first quarter, but improved operating results.

For the first quarter of the 2007 fiscal year, Books-A-Million posted e-commerce sales of $6.46 million, a drop of about 1% from web sales of $6.51 million in FY 2006. At the same time, lower shipping and warehouse costs helped Books-A-Million, No. 209 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites, post a first quarter profit of $233,000 vs. a net loss of $8,000 in the same quarter the previous year.

Overall sales totaled $113.8 million in Q1 vs. $112.6 million in the first quarter of FY 2006. Web sales represented 6% of total sales for Q1, the same percentage as a year ago.

“The first quarter was clearly challenging,” says Books-A-Million CEO Sandra B. Cochran. “A weak bestseller lineup and a soft media environment contributed to the disappointing results. While history, game books, humor titles, gifts and bargain books all performed well, they did not make up for the difficult quarter in the children`s books, cooking, diet, and health and inspirational categories.”
