Discover launches single-use card number option for online shopping

Discover Financial Services Inc. today launched an upgraded version of the 2-year-old Discover Deskshop, a virtual credit card for shopping on the web. The new version allows Discover cardholders to generate a single-use card number. Nearly 6 million Discover cardholders have created Deskshop accounts at DiscoverCard.com.

The National Consumers League says consumers` biggest concern about shopping online is that their credit card numbers could be stolen. However, 67% of consumers polled indicated that using single use credit card numbers would give them more confidence about making purchases on the Internet.

"Discover Deskshop 3.0 allows our Cardmembers to feel confident when they make online purchases because they know that their personal information is never at risk," says Colleen Zambole, vice president, Electronic Commerce, Discover Financial Services.

A customer using a Discover card checking out from an online retailer will receive a pop-up window offering the option of a single-use number. If the customer chooses the option, the Discover server will generate the number, which then can be used only at that merchant. The single-use option is available at all online merchants that accept Discover.

DiscoverCard.com is now offering a past purchases link, which will display up to 50 purchases made using a Single Use Card Number.

Discover Deskshop 3.0 was developed with technology from Orbiscom Inc., a provider of secure authenticated online payments.
