eBay makes a pitch to get more computer sellers
One of the fastest growing areas of eBay is the computer section. Sales at the computer section have grown 70% this year and will hit $1.4 billion. On a typical day, there are 400,000 item listings in the computer category.
But eBay wants even more. This week, eBay made its debut at COMDEX, the leading trade show for computer manufacturers and sellers, to get more manufacturers and sellers to consider an eBay outlet. Its participation in COMDEX was so important to eBay that it agreed to send Meg Whitman, president and CEO, to deliver a keynote address.
Sellers of computers and electronics on eBay are typically small merchants and individuals. But a growing number of major brand sellers are coming into eBay, including IBM, Palm, Iomega, Dell Financial Services, Sun Microsystems, ViewSonic, Xerox, D-Link and Ritz Camera. They are selling new, used, refurbished, and excess merchandise.
“eBay provides a marketplace that embraces new and used products, big and small sellers, and business and consumer buyers,” said John Herr, vice president of technology and entertainment for eBay. “We’re excited to promote the eBay marketplace at Fall COMDEX, the biggest event in the computer industry. It gives us a chance to reach many buyers and sellers, and discuss the emerging opportunities in the technology marketplace.”
