Online influence on store sales rises 43% in December, ShopLocal reports

The ShopLocal Index that measures consumer visits to online circulars that feature in-store promotions was up 43% in December versus the same month the prior year, and 36% for 2007 over 2006, reports ShopLocal, which hosts online circulars for retailers.

“The Index reflects the growing use of the Internet by consumers and retailers to connect at the store,” says Vikram Sharma, CEO of ShopLocal. The index is based on an average of 20 million visits to store promotions presented on the retail web sites of 50 major U.S. retailers, including J. C. Penney Co. Inc., Best Buy Co. Inc., Walgreen Co. and The Home Depot.

Consumer use of those circular sites was heaviest during the second weekend in December, when ShopLocal recorded 60 million page views. Page views per visit averaged 13.2 in December, up 5.1% from December 2006.
