Egghead.com has gotten new life as a division of Amazon.com. Egghead was one of the leaders of the retail march to the web, closing all its stores in 1998 to become an online-only retailer. It seemed like a good idea at the height of the Internet hysteria, but the company never made a go of it. Its fortunes fell deeper and deeper and hit bottom when a planned merger with Fry Electronics failed to take place.
Egghead filed for bankruptcy, and then Amazon stepped in, announcing last week that it had bought the Egghead assets and would resurrect it as a stand-alone brand of Amazon. Shoppers logging onto Egghead.com get a home page that looks just like Amazon.
The new Egghead.com site features electronics, computers, software, cameras, cell phones and services and computer and video games. To promote the re-launch of Egghead, Amazon is making Nintendo GameCube systems available exclusively to Egghead customers.
"We are thrilled to re-launch the Egghead.com site with all the power and benefits of the Amazon.com platform," said Steve Frazier, vice president for Amazon.com's electronics, tools and kitchen segment. "Egghead.com's consumer and business customers are fanatical about all things electronic, and we're pleased to continue providing them with the exceptional selection and service they've come to expect."
