Herman Miller deploys 3-D to make online furniture shopping easier

The development of high-tech imaging systems and more sophisticated digital imaging management is giving the furniture industry new life on the web.

Furniture manufacturer Herman Miller is deploying 3-D technology from Viewpoint Corp. to allow shoppers at its web site to configure office furniture arrangements before ordering them. La-Z-Boy, another furniture manufacturer, recently began promoting its system whereby a customer cam choose the frame and fabrics for a piece of furniture online and e-mail it to a La-Z-Boy store.

Herman Miller’s RED Plan-it configurator allows shoppers to swap out various furniture and accessory arrangements as they plan their offices online. Each new configuration also displays key data regarding the furniture's dimensions, features and pricing so customers can then order with a single click of the mouse, Herman Miller says.

"No longer does 3D simply add a wow factor,” said Greg Clark, brand manager of Herman Miller RED. “Viewpoint's technology truly melds form with function and makes shopping for complex products online much easier."

Herman Miller’s RED Plan-It configurator is based on Viewpoint's flexible format photo-realistic 3D and was developed by Michigan-based DotsInMotion and Texas-based Kanati.
