U.K. online sales grow 54% in 2007

Online retail sales in the U.K. grew 54% in 2007 over 2006, reaching £46.6 billion from £30.2 billion, reports the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index. The IMRG is the Interactive Media in Retail Group, a London-based trade association of online retailers.

In the fourth quarter, online retail sales reached £15.2 billion, 50% higher than the year before. Online shopping peaked in the first week of December, later than in previous years, the group reports.

The Index reports that 15% of all British retail sales took place online last year.

The largest sales growth occurred in consumer electronics, where sales in December were up 60% over December 2006. Strong growth also occurred in apparel and accessories sales and in beer, wine and spirits sales, the IMRG reports.

Index partner Capgemini is a provider of consulting, technology and outsourcing services.
