Mer-Tec Remains Vigilant Toward Client’s Security and Privacy Issues and Unveils Encryption, to be Offered with all NetBOSS™ Products

Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 24, 2001

Lewisville, Texas - A pioneer provider of solution software for the Retail Industry since 1994, Texas based Mer-Tec believes that “Internal simply isn’t internal anymore” as they announce that robust encryption capabilities will be offered with all of its NetBOSS™ family of software products beginning the 4th quarter, 2001. This strategic initiative anticipates continued industry vigilance toward the sensitive issue of data security and ensures a complete privacy solution for current and future Mer-Tec customers.

James McIntosh, President of Mer-Tec, said “The evolution of enterprise private networks to TCP/IP, combined with use of public networks and the Internet, has created a need for retailers to protect sensitive customer data like credit card numbers and health and medical data. Our customers will be able to protect their customer’s information as it is transmitted between or resident on store systems, web sites, and corporate host computers. Dubbed “Enterprise Data Lock” (EDL), the new capabilities are not aimed at blocking access to the network or the computers connected to it, but rather at blocking access to data resident on those computers or as it is transmitted between them.

Responding to one of the fastest growing areas of concern in today’s business world, Mer-Tec will offer high modularity and enhancement capabilities with its encryption offerings, implemented based on specific customer requirements. The “EDL” applications are based on Mer-Tec’s model for Retail connectivity and focus extensively on creating and managing digital certificates and encryption keys across hundreds or even thousands of computers through out a Retailers enterprise network. This historically has been a major obstacle to the deployment of encryption capabilities in the Retail Industry.

Mer-Tec also confirmed it had finalized it’s first contract on September 7th for a California based chain store. The chain will encrypt all financial transactions transmitted through out the network as well as sensitive data on all but the most secure machines. The systems protected under the NetBoss:EDL umbrella for this project include: Windows NT/2000 platforms, Unix Platforms, and Stratus (VOS) fault tolerant computers. A second project for a different Retail Chain is underway to provide secure Kiosk connectivity to corporate hosts via the Internet.

Mer-Tec provides its various NetBOSS™ software solutions to large volume retailers seeking advanced transaction and communications processing capabilities, including encryption. Among Mer-Tec’s featured applications are CyberSwitch, a high-performance Internet transaction switch; CentralSwitch, a communications platform for building business-to-business gateways; SCMS, (Store Communications Management Sub-system) ¯ a miniature transaction switch for in-store controllers; ETS, an Enterprise Transaction Server application for Stratus systems. Customized software solutions and consulting services are also available.

Mer-Tec is a respected leader in retail transacting technologies for providing reliability in “mission-critical” applications. By incorporating new tools and technology into their products, Mer-Tec is maintaining a corporate strategy based on their customer’s business interests and priorities, as evidenced in this latest announcement.
