Amazon.com reports it delivered more than 99% of the estimated 37.9 million items shoppers ordered online this holiday season – in addition to the more than 36,000 items purchased using Amazon’s last-minute shipping option, available on the site from Dec. 21 to noon Dec. 22.
Amazon’s "Delight-O-Meter," a site feature that offered a running tally of goods purchased online during the holiday season, counted items ordered from all five Amazon sites, including Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.fr, Amazon.de, and Amazon.co.jp, from Nov. 8 through Dec. 21. Items ordered from non-U.S. sites totaled more than 10 million. The top seller across all Amazon sites was Harry Potter books, with some 450,000 of the books ordered. LeapPad, a talking interactive book, was the year’s most popular toy at Amazon, followed by GameCube, Xbox and PlayStation 2. Also popular across all Amazon sites was the Shrek video and DVD, which sold some 150,000 copies worldwide.
Nearly half of the 36,000 items ordered using last-minute shipping were sent to non-billing address locations, with more than 60% of them ordered gift-wrapped, indicating a last-minute flurry of online gift-buying, Amazon reports. Gift certificates, magazine subscriptions and Circuit City purchases with in-store pick-up through Amazon’s new Circuit City store were popular items with last-minute shoppers.
