AT&T shuts down online store pending probe of hacking of credit card data

AT&T Inc. has shut down its online store pending an investigation of how hackers broke into its computer system, accessing credit card data and other personal information of up to 19,000 customers who bought DSL equipment through its web store.

AT&T shut down the online store over the weekend within hours of the hacking incident, and notified the affected customers and the major credit card companies whose cardholder accounts were affected, a company spokesman says. AT&T will pay for credit monitoring services for the customers.

The spokesman says he doesn’t know whether the online store, which is operated by a third-party vendor, is compliant with the Payment Card Industry data security standard mandated by the major card issuers. He declined to name the vendor operating the store.

AT&T “deeply regrets” the incident, chief privacy officer Priscilla Hill-Ardoin, said in a statement. “We recognize that there is an active market for illegally obtained personal information. We are committed to both protecting our customers’ privacy and to weeding out and punishing the violators.”
