Penney web sales up 16% in August; Jos. A. Bank direct sales rise 17.4%
Internet sales at J.C. Penney Co. Inc. increased about 16% in August over August 2005, while total department store sales rose 0.7% to $1.386 million from $1.376 million a year earlier. Comparable department store sales dropped 0.5%.
J.C. Penney, No. 13 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites, does not report Internet dollar sales. However, direct sales—catalog and Internet sales—rose 0.5% to $195 million in August from $194 million a year earlier.
Companywide sales were up 0.7% to $1.581 million from $1.57 million in August 2005.
Meanwhile, Jos. A. Bank Clothiers Inc., No. 227 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites, reported that combined Internet/catalog sales were up 17.4% in August from August 2005. The retailer does not break out Internet sales numbers.
Companywide, sales were up 4.6% to $29.6 million from $28.3 million in August 2005. Comparable store sales decreased 6.1%, compared with a 12.9% increase in August 2005.
Seven-month Internet/catalog sales were up 21.3% year-over-year while companywide sales were up 17.4% to $262.4 million from $223.5 million a year earlier.
