Supplement maker GNC expands into fitness apparel and equipment online
General Nutrition Companies, Inc., which sells its nutritional supplements in its own 4,500 outlets, in Rite-Aid stores and through an online link from its informational site, GNC.com, to its partner Drugstore.com, has branched out into online sales of fitness gear with GNCGear.com. The recently-launched site, which also can be reached through a link on the GNC.com home page, is a fully transactional e-commerce site that offers more than 2,000 fitness-related products including fitness apparel, equipment, videos, books magazines, and in a first for Pittsburgh, PA-based GNC, fitness footwear.
The site offers some of the same personal care and fitness-focused merchandise available in GNC stores, but in a much broader selection. GNCGear.com does not, however, sell GNC supplements on the site, though its home page links directly to GNC.com, whose home page in turn links to Drugstore.com.
GNCGear.com was developed and is operated by Pierpoint-Martin, an e-commerce outsource solutions provider. Pierpoint-Martin is supplying site design and hosting, and also customer service, order processing, fulfillment and merchandising. Pierpoint-Martin, based in Santa Ana, CA, also runs e-commerce operations for more than a dozen fitness-oriented companies such as fitness apparel manufacturer T. Michael Bodywear and magazine publisher Women’s fitness International.
