NRF and Sun sponsor web-based retail training courses
The National Retail Federation and Sun Microsystems Inc. are teaming up to take training of retail store personnel to the web. The NRF Foundation, the research and education arm of the NRF, and other sources will provide education content. Sun will host the courses on its LearnTone Learning Management System. The content will be peer-reviewed by the NRF Foundation and a committee of retail training experts. Among the topics that the courses will cover will be customer service, product training, manager training and loss prevention.
The training programs also will include a testing component so employers can assess how much the employees have learned. Sun has partnered with leading human resources software vendors so the results of assessments can be integrated into personnel records for pay increases, promotions and other HR purposes.
Bob DeLaney, director of Retail Industry Solutions Worldwide for Sun, says he envisions manufacturers taking advantage of such distance learning as well to train retail sales associates about the features and benefits of new products.
Sun already conducts training of about 200,000 users of Sun technology each year.
