Discovery Communications picks AOL executive to head digital ad sales

Discovery Communications has named Kathleen Kayse executive vice president, digital media sales, responsible for selling ads on the company’s 13 web sites tied to its television networks as well as on such newly acquired sites as Howstuffworks.com, Treehugger.com and Petfinder.com.

Kayse spent 24 years at Time Warner, most recently serving as executive vice president, marketing solutions, at Platform-A, the online advertising unit of AOL, which is part of Time Warner. Her previous positions at Time Warner included serving as publisher of People magazine, where she was responsible for advertising and marketing.

"Kathy is at the top of her game and the perfect leader to take over our growing digital sales operation," says Joe Abruzzese, president, ad sales, at Discovery Communications, to whom Kayse will report. "Her respect throughout the industry and vast knowledge of the digital marketplace positions Discovery to continue broadening the advertising opportunities across our organic and acquired web sites, mobile and on-demand offerings."

Discovery Communications, which is No. 186 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, also recently named Wonya Y. Lucas as chief marketing officer, responsible for company-wide brand strategy. She will report to chief operating officer Mark Hollinger and be based in the company’s headquarters in Silver Spring, MD. Kayse will be based at the company’s ad sales headquarters in New York.
