Toys ‘R’ Us opens new fulfillment center to support its retail web site

Having split from its Amazon e-commerce services contract earlier this year, Toys ‘R’ Us Inc. has opened a new 574,000-square-foot fulfillment center staffed with 300 full-time employees to support sales and an expanding product line on ToysRUs.com, the retailer said.

The Groveport, OH-based facility, which will also have 400 seasonal, part-time employees, more than doubles the existing 340,000 square feet of fulfillment center space in Groveport that will continue to support the retailer’s online channel, the company says. Toys ‘R’ Us is No. 31 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites.

"As Toys ‘R’ Us prepares for the upcoming holiday season, we`re aggressively adding to our online product assortment every day because our customers expect the largest and best selection of in-stock toys and games that kids truly want this holiday season," says John Sullivan, senior vice president, ToysRUs.com. "With the opening of this new fulfillment center, we are prepared to handle shipments to our customers nationwide, while managing our expansive inventory of the products that will top Christmas wish lists this year."

Toys ‘R’ Us has retained Exel, a sister company of carrier services company DHL, to operate its fulfillment facilities as well as handle delivery of products sold through its web channel. Exel and DHL are each units of Germany-based Deutsche Post World Net.

ToysRUs.com and its sister site, BabiesRUs.com, relaunched on July 1 on a platform designed and maintained by GSI Commerce Inc.
