Romance trumps recession: online Valentine’s Day spending is up 8.5%
In the face of economic woes, romance survives, at least online.
Internet shoppers spent an average of $142.70, 8.48% more than last year, from Feb. 1-11, the prime online shopping days leading up to Valentine’s Day, reports Retail Decisions, a payment processor and fraud-prevention specialist.
Gift cards were the most popular gift item purchased during the period, followed by roses, chocolates and cookies. Gift cards also were the top choice among those with only larceny in their hearts—buyers intent on committing fraud, Retail Decisions says.
Men were more likely to buy their Valentine’s Day gifts online than women, who were more likely to go to stores, says Retail Decisions. The data comes from Retail Decisions’ clients, which include retail chains Wal-Mart, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and UK supermarket chain Tesco.
