Food Lion Joins UCCnet Community; Grocery Chain Leads Drive for Improving Supply Chain Efficiencies
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J.--Oct. 29, 2001--UCCnet, a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization that provides item registration and global data synchronization based on industry developed standards, announced today that Food Lion will utilize the organization`s business-to-business Internet-based services.
Food Lion, which operates more than 1,200 grocery stores in 11 states and sells more than 24,000 different products, is currently in the process of integrating UCCnet services throughout their enterprise. The company is calling upon their suppliers to utilize UCCnet services to integrate standards throughout the trading community. To educate their suppliers about the benefits of global data synchronization and joining the UCCnet community, Food Lion is sponsoring a one-day educational forum on November 2 at the Charlotte Marriott City Center. The forum is free for all members of the Food Lion trading community. Attendees can register on the UCCnet web site at www.uccnet.org.
"UCCnet`s collaborative commerce services will enable us to bring added efficiency to our trading community by reducing the amount of incorrect item information among our suppliers," said Lewis Campbell, Vice President of Procurement, Food Lion. "By integrating data synchronization, Food Lion and its suppliers will be able to speak a common language electronically with regard to product information."
The integration of item registry and global data synchronization are widely recognized components that are vital to realizing the true bottom line benefits of collaborative commerce in today`s business environment. Through UCCnet, Food Lion and its supplier community will be able to reduce costly administrative errors and decrease lead-time requirements for new product introductions and changes to existing item information. UCCnet can reduce the administrative lead-time for a new product introduction from a six-week process involving up to 15 paper-based steps to a one-day electronic process.
"With UCCnet, Food Lion and its trading community have a means to communicate synchronized product information in real time at a very low cost," said Emil Martinez, Vice President of Business Development for UCCnet. "Global data synchronization provides competitive advantages and efficiencies that impact every function across the enterprise and the supply chain."
UCCnet will act as a checkpoint within the Food Lion trading community, ensuring that all product information is standards-compliant. Food Lion and its suppliers will have access to common product authorization files to ensure the right information for the right products is available in a secure environment. Food Lion will be able to receive updated information on products that they currently sell or on products that they are interested in selling in the future. When a supplier updates product information or introduces a new item, the information is automatically communicated to Food Lion via UCCnet. With the UCCnet service, Food Lion and its trading partners will be using standardized item information of the highest integrity in their e-commerce transactions.
