Books-A-Million web sales decline 12% in Q2

E-commerce sales at Books-A-Million Inc. totaled $5.9 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2007, a decrease of 12% from web sales of $6.7 million in Q2 of FY 2006. Total sales decreased by 0.17% in the second quarter to $121.2 million from $122 million in Q2 of fiscal 2006.

In the second quarter the web accounted for 5% of all sales. For its e-commerce business unit, Books-A-Million, No. 181 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites, posted operating income of $390,000 in Q2 vs. operating income of $180,000 in Q2 of FY 2006.

“Even though net sales for the electronic commerce segment for the thirteen and twenty-six week periods ended July 29, 2006, decreased slightly, operating income increased compared with the same period last year primarily due to lower costs incurred for shipping and warehouse handling,” Books-A-Million says in its recent 10Q filing.
