RealNetworks makes real plans to take on iTunes
RealNetworks Inc. is teaming with SanDisk Corp. and other consumer electronics manufacturers to develop a digital download hardware and software package designed to help the companies compete against iTunes.
RealNetworks, which also owns and operates the Rhapsody online music service, is releasing Rhapsody DNA, a new technology platform that enables device makers to deliver Rhapsody-related music and content to consumers via a broad range of portable, mobile and in-home devices. RealNetworks is teaming with SanDisk to integrate Rhapsody DNA into SanDisk’s Sansa MP3 players this fall in the U.S.
The Sana MP3 players with the special Rhapsody DNA platform will come equipped with nearly 32 hours of pre-loaded music from recording artists on EMI Recorded Music, SONYBMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and various independent labels.
In addition to SanDisk, RealNetworks also is working with Sonos Inc. to incorporate the Rhapsody DNA platform into Sonos’ wireless digital music systems. “Rhapsody DNA puts the celestial jukebox into the consumer`s pocket," says Real CEO Rob Glaser.
RealNetworks, No. 92 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites, launched the Rhapsody digital music service in 2001. Rhapsody now has a base of 1.6 million subscribers, according to RealNetworks.
