Shopping rebate site plans to create fundraising microsites for nonprofits

BoomerangPays.com, a five-month-old shopping site that offers consumers rebates on purchases at over 300 merchants, plans to target charities, schools and other nonprofit organizations with an offer to build fundraising microsites.

When consumers buy at BoomerangPays.com today they get rebates ranging from 1% to 50% at such retailers as Staples, Wal-Mart, Sears and Magazines.com . Those rebates are put into an account which the consumer can keep or designate for a charity. Boomerang Pays typically keeps 1% of the commission.

The planned microsites would have the look and feel of the participating nonprofit organizations, including their trademark colors and fonts. Those organizations could put links on their web sites to the Boomerang Pays microsites and commissions on purchases made through those sites would go to the nonprofit, says Andrea Reznik, CEO of BoomerangPays.com. She says Boomerang Pays would charge only the programming costs for creating each microsite, which she estimates at under $5,000.

Another web site launched last week also gives to charities a portion of rebates provided by retailers. At GiveandShop.com, a visitor can select from among 11 charities to receive the funds, then shop at 50 participating merchants, including Amazon.com, Netflix and 1-800-Flowers. Half of the rebate provided by the retailer goes to the charity and half to the site.
