Holidays over, Portals Recover in Transaction Rankings
Amazon.com held onto its #1 ranking for Internet retail transactions during January, according to the NextCard eCommerce Index. But toy sites, strong finishers during the recent holiday shopping months, dropped off NextCard's top 25 listing.
"The seasonality of e-commerce, much like offline retail spending patterns, is holding strong," says Tom Byrne, vice president of e-Commerce at NextCard. "Seasonal web retailers like toy merchants all but dropped from the post-holiday index, with regular monthly e-commerce services like ISPs re-emerging after the holidays."
Among online pharmacies, More.com moved into a strong lead, finishing the month #6 among Internet retailers. PlanetRx shot up 11 points to make the list for the first time at #25, while drugstore.com finished the month at #15.
Varsitybooks.com, taking advantage of a new school term in January, was the month's top mover, according to NextCard.
Three sites were new to the list: PricelineWebhouse, WebTV Networks and Register.com.
