UPS Delivers e-Commerce Unit
United Parcel Service, Atlanta, has formed a new subsidiary, UPS e-Ventures, to research and develop the shipper's e-commerce initiatives. A company statement says the new unit will identify and develop entirely new businesses related to supply chain management and e-commerce. And right off the bat, UPS announced that its first e-commerce business will focus on logistics.
"UPS recognizes the power the Internet has to impact business-to-business and business-to-consumer commerce," says Mark Rhoney, president of UPS e-Ventures. "UPS e-Ventures is a natural progression of UPS's 92-year heritage of expertise in operational execution and logistics--married with cutting edge technology on which we've spent $11 billion in 15 years."
The company's first e-commerce business, UPS e-Logistics, will provide end-to-end services for e-commerce startups. The group will focus on creating a service bundle for small- and medium-sized Web businesses, ranging from warehousing to order fulfillment to customer service.
UPS Worldwide Logistics already provides similar services to Nike.com, Boo.com and other Internet retailers. UPS e-Logistics will take advantage of the UPS transportation network worldwide and a global network of warehouses, the company says.
Rhoney, a 25-year veteran at UPS, most recently was vice president of electronic commerce marketing.
