FogDog's New Tricks

Fogdog Sports says it will launch new specialty shops for fishing, cycling and walking enthusiasts. The three new shops all feature Fogdog's "Learn-Shop-Share'' storefront, showcasing gear, apparel and accessories, plus expert advice, information and community content.

The fishing store offers rods, reels, line, lures, apparel and tools from such brands as Shimano, Daiwa, Penn and Rattlesnake. A community bulletin board in the store seeks and shares tales of battles with the "big one.'' In the cycling store, riders will find apparel, footwear, protective wear, packs, pumps and other accessories from Bell, Ritchey, Pearl Izumi, Blackburn, Giro, Hind and others. Pedal pushers can also contribute and check out favorite riding roads and trails. Walkers can select from apparel, footwear and accessories, watches, pedometers, body fat monitors and packs from Columbia, Nike, Moving Comfort, Avia, Oakley, PowerBar, Tanita and Saucony. In the content department, the store offers training tips and techniques, shoe guides, comparison charts and walking resources.

With these additions, Fogdog operates specialty shops for 22 sports. Additional products from another two dozen sports are also available on the site, bringing the total to more than 80,000 products from some 800 brands.

In other news, Fogdog says it held its lead among sporting goods e-commerce companies in February, gaining 15% in visitor traffic over January, according to Media Metrix. The number, it says, was more than double the combined total of (www.globalsports.com) Global Sports Network, a competitor that manages e-commerce operations for six brick-and-mortar sporting goods retailers, such as the Sports Authority and the Athlete's Foot. It did not release actual traffic figures, but PC Data Online puts Fogdog's traffic at 1.06 million unique visitors during February. Global Sports, meanwhile, had a combined total of 410,000 during February, according to PC Data.
