First-Ever Portal-Channel Rankings Debut With the November 2001 Jupiter Media Metrix U.S. Top 50 Internet Properties
New Jupiter Media Metrix Categorization Structure Delivers the Industry`s Most Accurate and Detailed Audience Ratings
NEW YORK, Dec. 26, 2001-- Jupiter Media Metrix, the global leader in Internet and new technology analysis and measurement, today released, for the first time, audience ratings for the vertical channels and key components of portals and other major Internet properties. Launched with the release of the Media Metrix November 2001 U.S. Top 50 Web and digital media property ratings, the company`s new categorization structure now ranks portal channels, online software applications (i.e., file-sharing, chat and gaming applications) and commercial online services (i.e., America Online, CompuServe and United Online) side by side in 27 categories and 71 subcategories. Jupiter Media Metrix also released today with its latest monthly audience ratings new metrics on how consumers access the Internet, as well as an updated policy on the reporting of pop-up and pop-under pages.
The importance of reporting portal components is apparent when considering the prominence of AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo! within the Jupiter Media Metrix categories. AOL properties were in the top 10 ranking of 37 categories and subcategories; Microsoft- and MSN-branded components were in the top 10 ranking of 28 categories and subcategories; and Yahoo!-branded components were in the top 10 ranking in 30 categories and subcategories. Some of the major categories where these companies are now represented include business-finance; real estate; e-cards; travel; e-mail services; and news-information (see data charts below).
"Over the years, online media have evolved from static Web pages to an array of niche content delivered through dynamic platforms and technologies including vast Web portals, proprietary online services and online software utilities like messaging and file-sharing," said Will Hodgman, president of Jupiter Media Metrix` measurement businesses. "Jupiter Media Metrix` new categorization and reporting structure has evolved with the Internet to provide the most accurate snapshot and reliable performance metrics to meet the needs of all companies with a stake online."
New Internet Access Metrics
To provide greater insight into how people consume online media from home, Jupiter Media Metrix today also introduced the Internet Access Report. As part of Jupiter Media Metrix` syndicated monthly ratings data, the metrics break out the top browsers and commercial online services that people use to access the Internet and proprietary networks. Highlights of the October 2001 Internet Access Report include:
-- Approximately 88.3 million unique users accessed the Internet from home
using an Internet access application, such as a Web browser or
commercial online service like AOL. (This does not include Internet
Service Providers).
-- The most popular Internet access applications in October 2001 were
Internet Explorer with 65.6 million users, America Online (AOL`s online
service) with 38.2 million users, Netscape Navigator with 15.7 million
users, and MSN Explorer (Microsoft`s online service and browser) with
4.1 million users.
-- According to average minutes spent per month, America Online had the
heaviest users with 902.6 minutes, MSN Explorer was second with 748.8 minutes and CompuServe was third with 617.7 minutes.
Updated Policy for Reporting Pop-up Pages
Adapting to the evolving Internet landscape and industry`s needs, Jupiter Media Metrix also introduced the new category of "promotional servers." This category includes individual sites that implement techniques resulting in involuntary visits to Web sites, specifically: those that sell e-mail lists; opt-in e-mail providers; image servers; promotional links; and stand-alone domains that generate the majority of their traffic from pop-up and pop-under ad traffic. Sites in the promotional servers category will not appear in any other categories and will not be included in any of the Media Metrix rankings. Domains that are a component of a roll-up will continue to be part of that roll-up, and the roll-up will, if appropriate, appear in the Media Metrix rankings. Because of their increasing prevalence in recent months, Jupiter Media Metrix will continue to closely monitor such promotional techniques delivered via the Internet, and update its reporting policies accordingly.
Significant pop-up and pop-under activity in the November 2001 Top 50 Web and digital media property ranking included:
-- Vivendi-Universal Sites - Pop-up pages on Vivendi-Universal, the number-five property with 35.8 million unique visitors, account for
approximately 54 percent of the entity`s traffic. Most of
Vivendi-Universal`s pop-ups are served through Iwin.com, which had
27.1 million unique visitors.
-- Columbia House Sites - Columbia House Sites, the number-24 property
with 14.5 million unique visitors, used pop-up ads to entice users to
subscribe to its membership services. Approximately 51 percent of its
traffic was driven by pop-ups.
-- Bizrate.com - Unique visitors to Bizrate.com increased 17 percent, from
10.4 million unique visitors in October 2001 to 12.1 million in
November. Although it is logical for a shopping-related site to
increase during the holidays, it is interesting to note that
Bizrate.com increased its traffic significantly through pop-up shopping
surveys. Pop-ups contributed approximately 37 percent of the total
traffic to Bizrate.com.
