Sun Microsystems` Technology and Collaboration Instrumental
For High-Availability
SANTA CLARA, CA, December, 2001--
Sun Microsystems, Inc. and eBay are celebrating the sixth year
of their relationship by looking back on a string of successful developments
during 2001. Both companies agree that the highlight of the year was eBay`s
record performance during the third quarter when Sun and eBay delivered a
record 99.9% site accessibility to the eBay community.
"The strategic implementation of Sun`s technology plays a critical role in
the success of the eBay community," said Maynard Webb, president of eBay
Technologies. "Sun powers our back-end systems and search infrastructure
which has been pivotal in allowing us to deliver a record 99.9% uptime
performance."
Webb added that the third quarter performance levels produced by Sun and
eBay are even more remarkable considering that the eBay site supported
250 million page views per day and sent out more than 1.2 giga-bits of data
per second during peak usage during that period. According to Jupiter Media
Metrix, Inc., during the week of December 9, 2001, the number of average
unique visitors to the eBay marketplace reached approximately 4.7 million in
early December, representing a 57% increase over the same time in 2000.
Mel Friedman, Sun`s senior vice president of Customer Advocacy, credits
the creation of the Sun Sigma project, which has helped facilitate
communication and streamline the decision making process among eBay and its
many technology vendors.
"eBay users generate an unbelievable amount of activity," Friedman noted.
"So we needed a method to help eBay, Sun and eBay`s technology providers to
move collaboratively and with the right data to support our decisions."
Friedman said the level of communication and cooperation underlying Sun
Sigma was unprecedented, but necessary. "We knew that efforts like launching
a five company quality project would be the best way for Sun to help deliver
the unprecedented availability to eBay`s network."
Based on the improved performance of eBay`s network, the marketplace has
extended its technology relationship with Sun by selecting and implementing
Sun`s technology and services to design and power its next-generation
infrastructure platform to handle growing customer demands.
eBay has selected the following Sun solutions:
-- Java(TM) 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE(TM)Technology) as the
basis for the new platform infrastructure,
-- New Sun StorEdge(TM) 9960 systems, to provide greater levels of
reliability, availability and scalability,
-- New Sun Fire(TM) V880 servers and clustered Sun Enterprise(TM) 4500
servers
-- Sun Professional Services consultants to help design and build the new
Java technology-based platform infrastructure
-- J2EE Technology Provides a Fundamental Shift To an Open
Platform
Earlier this year, eBay completed a comprehensive analysis by picking Java
technology as the fundamental software architecture platform for its
next-generation technology infrastructure. eBay cited the Java platform`s
open standards, flexibility, and programmer productivity as the basis for its
choice. eBay can take advantage of Java technology-based software from a wide
variety of vendors, including Sun, which gives them the freedom of choice to
help ensure that the eBay technology infrastructure can readily adapt to
support transaction growth and the addition of new services that eBay develops
or acquires.
"Sun and eBay have had a very busy and successful year," said Sun`s
Friedman. "We look forward to another productive year in 2002."
