Ex-Walmart.com chief joins NetShops as CEO

Carter Cast, former president and CEO of Walmart.com, has joined NetShops Inc., online retail operator of niche e-commerce web sites, as CEO. Doug Nielsen, co-founder, president & CEO, will become chairman. NetShops is No. 104 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.

Cast helped launch Walmart.com, No. 13 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, in 2000 and was with the company until this spring. Prior to Walmart.com, Cast was a member of the start-up team for Blue Nile, where he was senior vice president of marketing and merchandising.

"Carter brings to NetShops a proven track record in leading, developing and scaling high growth e-commerce companies, as well as tremendous credibility as a strategic marketer,” Nielsen says. “I'm thrilled to have him take over the helm as CEO as we continue to leverage the tremendous growth opportunities inherent in our business model.”

Cast began his career in the restaurant division of PepsiCo Inc. where he worked for Pizza Hut International and Taco Bell. He then spent five years at Frito-Lay where he managed the $1.5 billion tortilla chip category. Cast also has served as vice president of product marketing and marketing communications for Electronic Arts.

Omaha-based NetShops, which operates over 200 online stores, is privately held and funded by Insight Venture Partners and Sequoia Capital. It employs approximately 300 people. In addition to Nielsen, the founders are Mark Hasebroock and Julie Mahloch.
