Big Site On Campus
The Fledgling has launched an "e-commerce marketplace" for college students. The site features dorm-room items such as alarm clocks, bedding, bath and laundry products, chairs, fans, kitchen appliances, hooks, lamps, telephones, message boards, microcassette recorders, storage items, telephones, tools, wall decor and other "fun stuff."
And although the site is primarily designed for new and returning college students, it will also target parents and other customers. "We're an excellent site for parents as well,'' says 24-year old Fledgling president and founder Alex Buck. The site provides "practical items that set [parents'] minds at ease about their kids' well-being, such as telephones, answering machines, and alarm clocks. These things establish a lifeline, and give the parent the security of knowing their daughter or son is waking up for class in the morning."
The Fledgling established itself with college-bound high school students through the launch of its first phase in April 2000, including an Online Community, Resource Links, Speak Up! section and a nonprofit newsletter for graduating seniors. The site is also offering, through June 1, a fully outfitted dorm room as a prize for the student submitting the most creative entry describing his or her college aspirations. As a special incentive for first-time shoppers, The Fledgling is currently offering a free rubber ducky for the first 500 orders.
