The Goods on Elian Gonzalez
Would-be beneficiaries of the Elian Gonzalez international custody dispute are hanging out their shingles on eBay.
At one point, the site listed 123 items under a search of the 6-year-old's name. One especially popular item, since removed, was a "raft" that the seller claimed the Cuban boy used to float ashore after the boat carrying him and other refugees sank enroute from Cuba. It was bidding at $10 million. In a description of the item, the seller said he purchased the raft from a government auction: "This item is sure to be a big money maker. In the three short weeks that I have owned it, I have been approached by several historical societies who want to show it at their institutions."
Other items include various Elian Gonzalez domain names, protest banners, holy water, sand from Cuba, photo buttons, mugs, a picture the boy supposedly colored, a comb and toothbrush "resembling Elian Gonzalez's," and even "the dolphin [that] saved Elian Gonzalez." It was bidding at more than $4 million.
eBay officials were not immediately available for comment.
