Peapod expands into more Long Island markets

Internet grocer Peapod LLC will expand delivery into additional areas of Long Island beginning March 6. The new service extends Peapod’s reach eastward past the mid-point of the island. Peapod already serves parts of the New York suburban area.

Peapod, No. 46 in the Internet Retailer Top 400 Guide to Retail Web Sites, is teaming up with sister supermarket chain Stop & Shop, both owned by Royal Ahold, to fulfill orders. Peapod says it plans further expansion on Long Island in the next few weeks.

Stop & Shop cardholders will find a list of their frequently purchased items when they log onto Peapod. Groceries will be delivered as soon as the next day after the order is placed.

Royal Ahold of the Netherlands operates over 800 supermarkets in the US and around the world with total consolidated sales of US $50 billion. Peapod, founded in 1989, serves 16 U.S. markets including the metro areas of Chicago, Boston, Long Island and Washington, D.C., and communities in Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Virginia and Rhode Island. Peapod reports it has made more than 7 million deliveries since its first delivery in 1990.
