FTC Calls for End Of Online Privacy Regulation


A Federal Trade Commission report to Congress is recommending that legislators pass additional online privacy legislation requiring consumer-oriented Web sites that collect consumer information to provide individuals clear notice of data collection practices, offer them choices about how data is used, give them access to the information and protect the data. The recommendation to stop relying on industry self-regulation for online privacy comes after a survey showed that 20% of the random sample of sites with at least 39,000 unique monthly visitors implemented all four practices while 42% of the 100 most popular sites did.
