UPS’s Q3 package volume rises 4% while revenue per package is up 3.2%

UPS handled 4% more packages in the U.S. in the third quarter, compared with the year-earlier period, the company reports. UPS attributed the gain to a 6.1% increase in next day air packages and a 3.6% increase in average daily ground package volume.

U.S, domestic package revenue grew 6.9% during the quarter to $7.03 billion from $6.58 billion a year earlier. International package revenue rose 14.5% to $1.92 billion from $1.68 billion in 2004’s third quarter.

Worldwide average revenue per piece grew 3.2% to $18.93 in the second quarter, up from $18.35 per piece in 2004.

The company reported net income of $953 million, up 7.1% from $890 million a year earlier. “This has been a great quarter of growth for UPS,” said Mike Eskew, UPS chairman and CEO. “We have tremendous momentum right now in the U.S. and around the world and we see it continuing.”
