E-commerce sales up in March for J.C. Penney
Internet sales at J.C. Penney Co. Inc. increased 15.5% for the five weeks ended April 7.
E-commerce was the star player in the retailer’s direct sales. Total direct sales, which include Internet, catalog print media and outlet stores, hit $271 million, a 1.1% decrease compared with the same period last year. The company did not break out web sales numbers. Direct sales continue to be affected by softness in home categories, which represent a large portion of the direct channel’s volume, the company says.
Total department store sales increased 13.3% for the five-week period, coming in at $1.7 billion. Results for the month, the company says, were driven by strength in apparel categories, which benefited from an earlier Easter holiday. The retailer operates 1,039 department stores throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.
J.C. Penney is No. 13 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide. Craig Horsley, web site operations manager, will speak at the Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition, June 4-7 in San Jose, in a session entitled Making Rich Media A Rich Source of Sales.
