Borderfree more than doubles number of U.S. merchants selling into Canada

Canada Post Borderfree, a logistics provider to direct-to-consumer retailers, is opening a second U.S. distribution center to handle a 100% increase in the number of U.S. merchants selling into Canada this holiday shopping season, it said.

Borderfree will be serving 81 U.S. merchants in time for the holiday season, up from 35 last year, including Total Home Store, Creative Irish Gifts and InterfaceFLOR, said Borderfree president Patrick Bartlett. Its new distribution center, in Chicago, will serve new clients as well as existing ones that include Guess, Crate and Barrel, and Brookstone. Borderfree’s other distribution center is in Taylor, MI.

Borderfree also provides features including pricing in Canadian currency presented on its clients’ retail web sites. At Total Home Store, the currency feature as well as the shipping service has led to increased sales to Canadian customers, said Total Home vice president Amy Boyd.

“Since launching with the Borderfree technology, we immediately began to see more Canadian purchases given that our web site now offers pricing in Canadian currency and that we have a reliable shipping solution to deliver into Canada,” she said. “The fact that Borderfree began marketing its service to Canadians also contributed to the lift in business. Because of that added exposure to the buying public, we expect significant increases over the next year and beyond.”

Other Borderfree clients include Tiger Direct, Restoration Hardware, eBags and Victoria’s Secret.
