Circuit City and Napster sing a duet
Circuit City Stores Inc. and Napster Inc. have introduced a new digital music service, Circuit City + Napster. Napster’s digital music subscription service is the foundation of the joint effort, a co-branded store at CircuitCity.com/Napster.
Beginning April 29, consumers can sign up for Circuit City + Napster and gain unlimited access to millions of songs on their PCs and compatible digital music devices for $14.95 per month. New subscribers will receive the first month of access free, along with five free downloads of songs, which typically sell for 99 cents per track. Additionally, the exclusive relationship will give customers access to exclusive new songs.
“Increasingly, consumers are turning to the digital environment for entertainment and this new service will give our customers easy access to the content they want, when and how they choose,” says Irynne V. MacKay, Circuit City senior vice president and general merchandise manager for entertainment.
“Circuit City’s strength both in consumer electronics and as a music retailer should be an ideal environment to introduce Napster’s music subscription service,” says Chris Gorog, chairman and CEO of Napster, No. 100 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.
The companies decline to discuss terms of the deal. A Circuit City spokeswoman adds the company, No. 17 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, is “looking at additional opportunities to integrate our digital music offerings into hardware and services we sell.”
