Amazon programs will allow customers to buy online access to books
Amazon.com is developing two programs that will enable customers to purchase online access to any page, section, or chapter of a book, or an entire book. The programs will build on Amazon’s 2-year-old Search Inside the Book technology, which allows customers to search the complete interior text of hundreds of thousands of books, the company said.
The first program—Amazon Pages—will allow customers to purchase and read online just the pages they need from a book. The second program—Amazon Upgrade—will enable customers that have purchased physical books also to have online access to them.
“Amazon Pages and Amazon Upgrade leverage Amazon’s existing Search Inside the Book technology to give customers unusual flexibility in how they buy and read books,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO. Amazon is No. 1 in the Internet Retailer Top 400 Guide to Retail Web Sites.
One of every two books sold in the U.S. by Amazon is in the Search Inside the Book program, Amazon said. Based on those results, Amazon recently launched the program in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada and Japan.
