The FedEx trucks will be busy on July 21. Barely three months since it started accepting pre-orders for the next Harry Potter book, Amazon.com Inc. reports that customers have already placed orders for 1 million books. The previous Harry Potter book, in 2005, didn’t reach that level until nearly six months after Amazon started accepting pre-orders.
Amazon has also reduced the price of the new book—“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”—by another 90 cents, to $17.99. List price is $34.99.
Amazon started accepting pre-orders Feb. 1. First-day pre-orders in the U.S. were 547% higher than first-day pre-orders for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," the sixth book.
Amazon, No. 1 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, is guaranteeing delivery on the date of release—July 21—for customers who choose standard shipping.
