Online retail sales will nearly double by end of 2005, eMarketer projects

Online retail sales will reach $88.1 billion in 2005, nearly double 2002’s $45.5 billion, research company eMarketer Inc. projects. E-retail sales this year will total $58.2 billion, eMarketer says, for growth of 28% over last year. 2002’s sales were 27% over 2001, according to eMarketer’s figures.

Travel-related online sales will total $45.2 billion in 2005, almost double 2002’s $24.8 billion. Those sales will reach $31.9 billion this year, up 28% vs. last year.

EMarketer’s “North America E-Commerce: B2B & B2C” report, which come out this week, also reports that 9.4% of b2b purchasing was conducted over the Internet, according to a study by Forrester Research Inc. and the Institute for Supply Chain Management, 45% greater than the proportion done over the Internet in Q2 and Q3 and 65% greater than Q1’s proportion.
