Online retail spending grew 8% in the week that ended April 20 vs. the same week a year earlier, reaching $778 million, up from $721 million a year ago, comScore Networks Inc. reports. Online travel spending was flat: $599 million for the week ending April 20 this year vs. $507 million for the corresponding week last year.
During the same week, offline spending experienced a boom, increasing 8.3% for the week ending April 19 vs. the same week last year, according to Shopper Trak’s National Retail Sales Estimate. Shopper Trak notes that April is usually a volatile month for retail. “It seems to be more volatile this year due to war and weather issues,” Shopper Trak says.
