Internet search moves from pay-per-click to pay-per-click-to-call

Though limited in the U.S., click-to-call is popping up as an Internet search option in different markets around the world. The latest is Australia, where search engine Sensis.com.au lets users one-click into a call with an advertiser, Sensis said today.

Sensis is offering the eStara click-to-call service to advertisers at a flat-rate fee throughout a pilot period, after which it will migrate in 2006 to auction-based pricing, it said. It declined to provide more details on the flat-rate pricing or specify how long the pilot would run.

"Sensis is very excited to offer Australia's first 'Click to Call' solution, a leading edge technology," said Alex Parsons, group manager of Sensis.com.au. "We're committed to delivering innovative advertising solutions and encourage advertisers to participate in the trial to help grow their business, by driving direct phone leads from search results.”

Sensis will eventually expand the service to include call-tracking numbers in addition to click-to-call buttons in search results. Built on eStara’s Voice over Internet Protocol platform, the service will track phone activity for toll-free numbers and provide real-time reporting and number-provisioning, Sensis said.

Other search engines using eStara’s click-to-call feature include Amazon.com Inc.’s A9.com in the U.S., Yahoo Search in the UK and Ireland, and others in France, Spain and Sweden, an eStara spokesman says.
